Major Gifts
The Major Gift Program annually recognizes the donors of gifts of $1,000 or more as those who have responded with exceeding generosity to the total needs of the Home. These gifts are acknowledged in the Home News publication in a special listing.
The Designated Major Gift Program allows a donor to endow a room or its furnishings in memory of, or in honor of, a loved one. A plaque listing donor and honoree is then permanently installed on the door of the room. Regular gifts to the program may be accumulated until the amount needed is reached. Listings of the rooms and areas available will be furnished by the Development Office upon request.
Wills and Bequests
As the beneficiary of individual’s estate planning, the resources of the Home have grown. Bequests, unless designated otherwise, are placed in the Reserve Fund. The ministry of NLHV is strengthened by those who will continue their support beyond their lifetime through their Will.
The Gift Annuity Program
A Gift Annunity is a frequently used vehicle in financial, retirement income and estate planning. The Gift Annuity is based on an irrevocable gift contract with NLHV that is backed by the NLHV asset portfolio.
The Sarah Utermehle Society
The Sarah Utermehle Society was established in November of 1990 to honor those persons who carry on the legacy of Mrs. Sarah Utermehle, who 100 years earlier donated the land in Washington D.C. for the National Lutheran Home. Mrs. Utermehle supported the vision of the Home’s mission into the 20th Century. Members of the Society have given gift annuities of ten thousand dollars and greater, or have in some way indicated inclusion of the Home as a beneficiary of their estate. These foresighted supporters of the Home are "Reaching into the 21st Century" to insure that the vision started so long ago will continue.
NLHV agrees to pay the donor a set, regular income calculated on the amount of the annuity and the age of the annuitant. NLHV will provide a 1099 form for tax purposes indicating what portion of the income is ordinary income and what portion is considered non-taxable. The non-taxable portion is considered a return of principal extending through the years of life expectancy. The second benefit is a generous tax deduction in the year of the gift with an additional five years for unused portions. Thus, the Gift Annuity benefits both NLHV and the giver. NLHV retains the residual of the gift upon the death of the annuitant and the annuitant enjoys tax advantages during his/her lifetime, along with the knowledge that there will be a substantial gift to NLHV.
A free, computerized analysis is available through the Development Office to provide examples to individuals who may be considering a Gift Annuity. The intent of Congress is to support charitable, non-profit institutions by allowing donors to use this means of giving.
Planned Gifts
Planned giving by stated intention or actual contribution benefits the Home’s ministry by adding to its long-range resources. It may be accomplished through a contract, trust, or will and is “planned” by the donor and assisting professionals in the area of gift planning.
